AM Competency Framework (AMCF)

The Canadian Network of Asset Managers (CNAM) has taken its Asset Management Competency Framework for Canadian Communities (AMCF) and expanded it into this comprehensive online resource for improving the AM capacity of public sector organizations in Canada and enhancing the capabilities of AM practitioners in those organizations.

Competency Development Planning

COMMIT to a Development Plan – Part A: Develop a Plan

Once you have assessed an individual’s capabilities and competency gaps and set priorities for closing those gaps you are ready to plan how to meet those priorities. This is accomplished with a Competency Development Plan: A structured action plan designed to improve knowledge, skills, and behaviours related to a specific discipline, in this case Asset Management. A Competency Development Plan will typically include:

  • The identification of development goals and strategies
  • The selection of appropriate development activities to meet development goals in alignment with development strategies
  • The creation of a detailed plan for execution of development activities, encompassing details like the scope, cost, timing, delivery method, and support required for the activity
  • The selection of suitable approaches for tracking, measuring, and evaluating the activity and activity outcomes

Using the AM Development Tool to Develop a Plan

Tab 5 of the AM Development Tool can be used to develop a Competency Development Plan for an individual, covering the details above. You can use the example competency management activities listed in the tables of the Activities section the Web Portal to select appropriate development activities for your plan. Development activities will primarily be found in the Learning and Development section, but don’t forget to look in the Performance Communication section for additional ideas.
